I am working on a 4500 sqft commercial building that is presently
unsprinklered. There is no plan or requirement to install a full system at this
point. The building is to be occupied as an auto body shop. There is an
existing 14x24 spray booth that has a system fed from the 2” domestic. There is
a system in the spray booth that is neither complete nor hydraulically correct.
I am in the process of re-designing it.

The spray booth requires 4 sprinklers and the exhaust stack, one. The design
criteria is Extra Hazard 2. The sprinkler flow for the 5 sprinklers is 178 gpm.
If I look at the “Phantom Flow” requirements, that would result in an
additional 822 gpm to be added at the point where the furthest branch line
meets the cross main to make the 1000 gpm. First of all, is this really
required? Secondly, this seems ridiculous to do this in an otherwise
unsprinklered building. What purpose does it serve?
