It depends. Is their use (Building Code Occupancy type) the same as what was when the building was built?
Owners will say they are the same often to avoid going through zoning hearings and other regulatory hurdles. So, for example if the building was originally constructed as an F-2, Factory Low hazard occupancy, it would probably not have required sprinklers. Now, in some areas of the country, sprinkler protection is required regardless of the Occupancy so local codes need to be reviewed to determine what is required. Determining Occupancies as they are defined in the building code aren’t something that is of real concern to a sprinkler contractor nor really in their realm of responsibility. So, whether or not sprinklers would be required would be a question for the local Code official if you are not fully aware of the local code requirements.
