Let me play Devil’s Advocate here. James says the building is 40 feet high. So
ESFR protection is probably provided via a table that allows rack storage up to
35 feet high (I’m speculating here, but probably accurate).

If the building is 40 feet tall, then the sprinklers are somewhere below that,
but let’s just say that the sprinklers are at 40 feet. James says the cable
tray is 25 feet below the sprinkler. So the cable tray is no more than 15 feet
off the ground. So there can’t conceivably be storage any higher than 15 feet
directly below the cable tray. I’m not sure that is going to cause any kind of
meaningful obstruction, because I’m not sure there can be any kind of
meaningful fuel load below the cable tray.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [Sprinklerforum] Re: ESFR and Continuous Obstructions

Had this discussion in a seminar about ESFR sprinklers, They specifically
direct a large amount of the water straight down for rack penetration, that is
why there is not allowed to be any obstructions directly below the sprinklers,
the cable tray needs to move.

NFPA #13 (2013) section 8.12.5.3 Continuous Obstructions Below Sprinkler.

Building is 40’-0” high and is protected with ESFR K25 sprinkler heads.

We have an electrical cable tray that is 1’-0” wide and they have located it
below a line of ESFR sprinkler heads. The cable tray is located 25’-0” below
the sprinkler heads.

Code does not give a distance below but only states that it needs to be locate
1’-0” to the side of the sprinkler heads or you need to provide sprinkler
protection below, but my logical brain says this should not be a problem.

Comments.
