Most AHJ’s here in the Seattle area say no to any paint applied fire retardants
and reference that particular part of the code. They insist it must be factory
applied by the manufacturer or they won’t accept it.
I know it’s been tried with wood framed Porte Cocheres and that brings up a
whole new problem of exposure to the elements over time.

I typically wont agree to it when doing design build of course knowing that the
AHJ most likely will shoot it down anyways.

Good luck.

And the local AHJ says he’ll approve it if I approve it. And I do not want to
get involved.

This is true for impregnated fire treatment however this also weakens the
structural member. There are intumescent paint on the market that can be
applied but must be approved first by the local AHJ.

The problem with these applications can be a lack of uniformity in the
thickness applied (as with any coating) but section 1.5 allows alternatives
were approved by the local AHJ

This cannot be a paint applied after construction, but must be during the wood
manufacturing process.

Subject: [Sprinklerforum] Intumescent Paint

Has anyone dealt with a situation where an intumescent paint has been used on a
wood structure to make a space above a ceiling non combustible? I’ve never been
a fan of this stuff but I have a building owner that is adamant about using it.
