I'm no advanced user, so I cannot help much so far. I can only ask, regarding the second problem: did you use the :nowrap: option for the math directive? http://sphinx-doc.org/ext/math.html?highlight=math#directive-math
Maybe some of your rst code and the relevant parts of the conf.py file (math extensions, etc.) would be useful. Also the sphinx and docutils versions you are using. I hope somebody can help you further.
