That's kind of an old kernel for a machine connected to the Internet. 
Have you done security updates?  The last kernel RH released for 7.1 
was 2.4.20-28.7.

There's also a newer perl package -- perl-5.6.1-36.1 is the latest 
one for RH 7.1

Since it's a RH box, why not get the SRPM and build yourself a nice 
binary package?

rpmbuild --rebuild spamassassin-2.61-1.src.rpm works beautifully.  If 
you installed some or all of the perl prerequisites via CPAN, you 
might need to add --nodeps to the rpmbuild line.
