Thanks for your response. I get the error when I run "make install", and the error message clearly states that it is terminating because I don't have permissions to create executable content with gcc.
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
make: *** [spamd/binaries.mk] Error 77
As you suggested, I followed the per-user instructions, but they too rely on some gcc compilation. It is not the writing to a particular folder that I have problems with, it is creating an executable with gcc that I cannot do.
Finally, to clarify, I have previously installed several versions of SA in my account, without problems. I was trying to upgrade from 2.54. Do you know if the code base has changed so that there is a new portion that requires compilation? Could there be any work-around for my problem?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
Either I'm reading this wrong or you wrote it wrong. Do you get an error when you run "make" (without the install). If you do then it is making the file (thus gcc works). OTOH if you do not have admin access to the box "make install" will indeed fail because it will try to install the binaries in a directory that you do not have permission to.
There should be some documentation on installing it on a per user basis (i.e. not root). Try those guidelines/directions and see if that helps.
Also, when you say upgrade you mean that it's already installed on the box or your user account. If it's the box you need the admin or ISP to do it.

Subject: [SAtalk] Need installation assistance
Hello,
I am trying to upgrade to SA261. Unfortunately, the server processing my mail does not let me create executables with gcc, so I am unable to go through the standard SA install process. (Fails at "make Install".) Does anyone out there have any ideas on how I can get SA up and running without having gcc permissions?
Thanks,
Chris Eykamp
