The cost here is the key, If you have only a few users, that's one thing. I manage 10,000 users, so those services would cost me between 70k and 150k a year... That's 3-4 good admins worth of salary for what the yearly subscription would cost, Since using SA I have only 1 technician doing the maintenance on the SA boxes (Along with him doing 100 billion other things) for me SA is the best choice for the money.
This article is fairly typical... The "Commercial" Software tested were all current versions, yet SA most defiantly was not.. I mistake? Either way the results were skewed by the version of SA. It's not that different from when MS tested Windows against Linux. The windows platform got tweeks from MS engineers, while the Linux platform was mis-configured and was a base install. Anyone in the scientific community would laugh at any results reproduced from such as test, as the baseline settings were not all equal. Is SA the easiest thing to setup, No, in all reality I am sure those other products are easier, But when you look at the costs involved, ease of installation is not a good criteria for selecting software, The main criteria is does it do what you need it to and is there anything else out there, easy to install or not, which does the same thing for a lower cost per year and which is just as reliable. I am all for pointing out the short comings of software, many open source products cause me to pull my hair out in frustration due to poor Docs, things that don't work, and things that work but not as they are supposed to. However time and time again, the end result is that MOST open source software is more cost effective in the end than most commercial software if you look at the true cost of ownership. Just my 2 cents. Hello, I recently read your article on: http://www.infoworld.com/article/03/11/14/45FEspam_2.html I just need to say a few things, First of all, why did you use such an old version of SpamAssassin? You compared last years SpamAssassin with this years spam, of cource you will not see good results! Programs need to be updated! I bet you downloaded the newest and greatest versions of all those commercial packages, why didn't you update SpamAssassin to it's newest version? I am sure SpamAssassin would have done much better than those commercial packages if the admin knew how to properly use it. SpamAssassin 2.4 is really out-dated, it's missing Bayes and thousands of other fixes that make it a better product. I had a good laugh on your article, you say "Spend the 10 or 20 per month per year for one of the commercial services", sir Dialup ISPs only receive 10-20 per month from their clients, how are we supposed to afford everything else when all our money goes to commercial e-mail services which we can do for free on our own in our spare time?
