Hello Howard, You may want to scan http://www.uwasa.fi/~ts/http/quote.html or similar documents. It simplifies the task of reading and understanding a long discussion.

I've been here, what, five months? :-) HB>>> Is there a place to look at to find out how someone who has a HB>>> server based SpamAssassin can modify the whitelists, blacklists, HB>>> and give SpamAssassin feedback about SPAM - from my own PC? Basics: Head for http://www.spamassassin.org/doc/Mail_SpamAssassin_Conf.html -- Though that documentation may not match your version of SA exactly, the basics remain mostly the same. The sections from "Description" through "User Preferences" apply to you, down to (you can stop at) Deprecated Options. Then head for http://www.exit0.us/, especially the "How to" section, and then the "Rules pages" section. Don't miss the "Other rules sites"! RM>> I can share parts of my user_prefs with you. ... The top of my user_prefs file: required_hits 9 # How many hits before a mail is considered spam You'll notice that first line sets my "this is spam" score to 9. You indicated that yours was 2 or 3. SA is normally distributed with that threshold at 5, and they suggest that most people will want to raise it. I use the same user_prefs file for well over a dozen email accounts, including business accounts and non-profit email accounts, and so I need to be extremely careful to avoid false positives (normal email flagged as spam). That's why I use 9. You may want to return to 3, or 4, or 5. use_bayes 1 # turn on Bayes analysis of ham vs spam auto_learn_threshold_spam 30.0 auto_learn_threshold_nonspam -2 bayes_auto_learn_threshold_spam 30.0 bayes_auto_learn_threshold_nonspam -2 Apparently the first two lines there are needed to specify the thresholds for SA version 2.5x, and the second two lines are needed for version 2.6x. Two of my three web domain groups have migrated, so I use both sets of settings in my user_prefs. score ACT_NOW_CAPS 1.80 # increased 06/04/03 score ADDR_FREE 4.00 # increased 06/13/03 score ADULT_SITE 1.50 # Added 06/06/03 score AS_SEEN_ON 3.50 # Added 06/06/03 score BAD_CREDIT 3.00 # increased 06/04/03, 06/16, decr 07/09 You'll probably find that some of the basic rules distributed as part of SA do well for you, but would do better with a slightly different score. You can use lines like these to change the scores of existing rules. You'll find the rules at http://www.spamassassin.org/tests.html whitelist_from_rcvd [EMAIL PROTECTED] tradeeasy.com # non-spam, to CW whitelist_from_rcvd [EMAIL PROTECTED] cio.com # CIO Magazine That's how you add whitelists to your user_prefs. There's also a "whitelist_from" without the "_rcvd", but you should use the _rcvd version whenever you can. blacklist_from [EMAIL PROTECTED] # spam, harvested addr, 09/09 blacklist_from [EMAIL PROTECTED] # spam, harvested addr, 09/09 blacklist_from [EMAIL PROTECTED] # spam, harvested addr, 09/10 Those are blacklists. You may want to simply copy William Stearns' accumulated blacklist to the bottom of your user_prefs, and refresh that copy every month or so. It saves me a LOT of work.
