In theory, it's safe. In practice, it's slow and ... ?
In practice, in my case, it's not slow at all -- But NetApps seem to have a pretty decent NFS implementation. Access to a lot of stuff (though I haven't clocked Bayes specifically) is often faster than local disk access over a 1Gb link between our Sun mail servers and the NetApp filer.
I can't speak for how it'd work using someone else's NFS implementation, but it works like a champ with Sun and NetApp.
