Can I do that in CPAN or do I have to do it outside to correct the problem?

When I do a "install Digest::MD5" and "install Digest::SHA1" in CPAN
currently it tells me they are both up to date.

I believe my perl is in /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.0

I think you need to reinstall Digest::MD5, and/or Digest::SHA1. Those
modules are likely in /usr/lib/perl/5.6.1, which the current perl cannot
find.
