It is probably waiting for some network query. Try adding this to /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf : skip_rbl_checks 1 use_razor2 0 use_dcc 0 use_pyzor 0 Or run spamd or spamassassin (which ever you use) with the -L flag.
