I am having the same problems...
The reason for me is: Out of memory.
Because it runs low on memory, it starts to use
swap, gets even more slow then it already is and
dies because of the memory and cpu usage (load avg 54).

I think I tracked down what is causing this lately:
I am mail flooded.  I blame the SoBig worm for now,
although I didn't check yet if that is it; but it
must be, before I started to /dev/null it I already
received one SoBig mail every 2 seconds!

Without SA (and bayes) my firewall could handle that,
but not anymore with spamd running :(.

I am going to turn off spamassassin for a while I
think.
