Can anyone offer advice on this? Any good arguments I can bring to the table against getting the appliance?
You'd really have to be specific as to which appliance..
I've seen a lot of products out there (ie: trend's "sensitive content" blocker) which block on single words.. including exploit and vulnerable.. This is real fun on computer security mailing lists where questions about security vulnerabilities get bounced back by the mailservers of subscribers who have these "amazingly effective" tools..
There are also some pretty reasonable products out there too, but just "an appliance" leaves little grounds for judgement.
As for accuracy, good luck doing better than SA does.. SA's not perfect, but it's got one of the better systems out there with some of the highest accuracy ratings. The best I've ever seen any other tool do is some of the bayes-type systems wind up beating SA by a small margin if you train them well.
