I was/am in a belief that procmail does not support Maildirs.. SpamAssassin
certainly is not the one to blame, it does not write anything to maildirs.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I have maildrop in place of procmail just for the
Maildir format.

Courier IMAP & maildrop are good tools.
