IIRC, that's a valid field.. some RFC somewhere talked about it.
I forgot which one, but I've seen it pop up on the Postfix list a few
times.

Yep in fact, the dsn.rfc-ignorant.org blacklist explicitly lists domains that incorrectly refuse mail that at the SMTP layer has a null envelope from.
