Yes, use 5.8. :-) I have amavis-new, spamassassin and postfix running on a Red Hat 8.0 machine with perl-5.8.0-55. It has been running 24/7 for a month or so with no problems. Just make sure the LANG variable is NOT set to anything.utf8. That is guaranteed to make perl blow chunks.
