After having successfully integrated spamassassin via procmail to my
home based mailserver i've started corresponding with my parents'
university, regarding filtering in their facilities.

In my dad's department there's a SunOS mailserver, which does the
filtering okay so far, in testing conditions with a dusty version of
sa.

The problem is that due to security policies sa is limitied to local
tests only. I was wondering about the effectiveness of running a pyzor
or dcc server on the local network, when the user base is only 500 or
so. The number might grow to around 3-4k, should the solution escape the
math/cs department (the numbers include many dead student accounts, but
i reckon they might receive spam too).

i'm not sure wether security will permit, but they do have a publicly
open machine set up as a peer (or however you define members in
hosts.equiv), which i reckon could host a dcc server, acting as a sort
of proxy, if you will. flooding with other servers is probably better
than nothing, but will still suffer from latency issues, i guess.

Another idea is to use some kind of hack to split up the clients into
two parts, a client and server model, via some kind of tunnelling
mechanism, such as netcat. This will allow the clients to ultimately run
on a machine open to the outside world.

Last but not least is the option to run spamd on the already busy
external server. This is probably the most advantegeous, but hardest
administratively. The technical aspect, however, should be seamless, as
homedirs are nfs mounted and thus the user_prefs et all should be the
same.

has anybody had any experience with these systems? any caveats i've
missed?

Thanks in advance,
