I recently installed SA+amavis-new+postfix on my mail server. I have been
feeding it spam and ham on a daily basis for about 2 weeks. It suddenly occurred
to me that I may be screwing up the results. I have spam quarantine set to
forward to me with procmail putting it in a separate spam box which I then review to be sure it is spam.
I use Postfix 2.0.12 and amavisd-new, I don't use Procmail. I simply configure Amavis to write spam rejections to a quarantine directory. Non-spam is given back to Postfix to deliver.
If it is spam I copy it to a spam folder to later be fed to sa-learn. I randomly pick ham and drop it into an ham folder to also be fed to sa-learn.
If you configure SA auto-learn correctly, you shouldn't need to teach it non-spam at all.
I run a cron job daily (script) to teach SA spam, but that's just a catch-all. It normally learns spam automatically.
My question is does the forwarding of the mail to me by amavis-new and postfix mess with the Bayes filtering scores since the spam-quarantine user is never the original recipient?
Why should that make any difference? Judging spam has nothing to do with the recipient, simply the contents of the message. The only justification for running Procmail at all with your setup, as far as I can see, is to enable per-user preferences and databases.
Would it be better to just have amavis-new drop the spam in a directory for later processing by me?
I don't know whether it's a better idea or not. It's what I do - and it works :-)
If what I am doing is screwing things up should I just delete the Bayes db and start over again after fixing the configuration??
I don't think you need to.
Best,
Tony
