The BBC is no different than any other news organization. The prejudices (or non-prejudices) of their staff come right through in their reporting. They're no _Pravda_, but somewhere between the Falklands and now, they've swung further to the left and become more opinion-based in their reporting. I think they're similar in many respects to NPR in the US, perhaps because both are funded by the government, so they tend to attract reporters who are inclined towards public service (and thus they and their audience tend to more authoritative fiscally and more libertarian socially). And, as you say, they need to "prove" that they are independent which can have a paradoxical effect about the quality of their reporting. :-) I haven't read/heard the BBC Beverlander story. Any problems there are probably mostly ignorance.
