.....you try to post a message to the spamassassin list ? ;-) Try leaving 'vmstat 5' running in a window and see if you see lots of activity in the 'si' and 'so' columns (Swap in and Swap out) when the load average is high. With only 128MB of ram and no limiting of scanning concurancy, the server is probably being pushed into swapping when a burst of messages come through, and as soon as you start swapping, the load average will skyrocket...
