Sorry Dave, I have to disagree with you here. As an admin who provides in-house support, I lose respect for the average human being. I cannot tell you how many times I have to remove virii, reinstall s/w or entire OSen, or remove spyware. These are adult who repeat their actions.
The problem, I think, is their ignorance. In the work place, the computer has moved away from being just a word processor to being the central hub for all information. Most of *us* already work that way, but this is a new concept for the average business joe. Most of them don't have the computer chops to be able to understand the cause/effect relationship in a computer environment.
*Utterly OT*, but your solution:
A colleague and I recently installed Linux terminal server under RH 9 for a high school with around 40 current users, with win4lin to run necessary Windows stuff (all the essentials are standard Unix/Linux, including Openoffice.org 1.0 and Postfix/SA).
This was a "first" for us and our answer to problems such as you experience them.
The server is a bumped-up IBM Netfinity ("huge amount" of RAM and large RAID HD capacity, Gigabit -> 100 MB switch etc. = relatively expensive), but the "workstations" are tiny, cheap remote-boot blades with no floppy drives or CD-readers, flat TFT screens. Each Windows session runs in a sandbox and though users can theoretically install stuff, central administration simplifies control. Software costs are ridiculously low, even with full Windows and win4lin licensing.
Just as a reminder that it *is* possible to thwart idiot and childishly petulant users. Don't imagine I haven't experienced your problems myself; they were the reason for the above.
Best,
Tony
