Or even if they don't subscribe the address, they'll do list submissions
to moderated lists that send back "your message has been set aside for
the moderator" auto-responses.

A worm has been sending mail to the mutt-users list (and one other that I
forget at the moment) with the zsh-users and/or zsh-workers lists as the
return addresses, so everyone on the zsh lists are being hit with the
mutt-users moderator responses.  Argh.
