And note that starting from a tarball doesn't prevent you from getting the advantages of RPM database management of the package. You just have to rebuild the package on your system from the tarball. Set up a "buildmeister" user for building RPM's and run "rpmbuild -ta xxx.tar.gz" to rebuild the binary RPM from the tarball, tuned to your system.
