[ I'm just catching up from a couple of weeks ] One thing you might want to lookat (if you don't already) is putting you servers behind a layer4 switch to balance smtp rather than relaying on DNS to do it. Before I did this spammers would pick out one of my mail servers and then send all their spam to it, this would overload this machine while the other machines in the farm were not having any problems.
