I've got another way (not necessarily more elegant, though) at 
http://users.2z.net/rpuhek/scripts_public/spamd/

My approach currently relies on grepping the syslog file, which may 
eventually be a bit cumbersome...       I've also got things set up to be 
able to monitor spamd running on a seperate host.
