I was not clear, it is a low end Dell PowerEdge Server class machine, dual CPU (although I think that 6.2 Linux onlu sees one), 512M Ram, ..., load is low. You are right on the money. With "-L", it runs much faster. It is the DNS lookup (and reverse lookup) for two names and an IP that slows everything down. With the "-L" option for spamassassin and spamd, when running 12 concurrent checks, the spamassassin takes about 9-10 secs, while the spamc ones all take up to 1 sec. Thanks for the help!
