Ooops, looks like a perl 5.6ism -- Anyone who knows enough about 5.0x want to 
fix this?  Seems to me like opening to a variable is entirely reasonable thing 
to attempt...  Looking at other bits of code which open things, it looks like 
simply removing the $ and the my() declaration will probably fix the problem?  
Maybe uppercasing the DCCHDL for convention's sake.  I've checked that in.  Is 
the open2() call down below that in the code going to cause problems too?
