Here are some commonly used av scanners:
1. qmail-scanner http://qmail-scanner.sourceforge.net
2. MIMEdefang ?
3. Amavis http://www.amavis.org

I personally use qmail-scanner which gives you the ability to block messages
that contain certain attachment types. ie. .exe, .bat, .whatever-you-want.
you can also block messages based on matches to other headers as well.  You
can do all this without using a commercial AV but it does integrate with a
whole bunch and I believe at least one opensource one.
