Hmm... I changed the way I start spamd to "spamd -d -c -a -F1 -u spamc"
and then restarted spamd.  I got the same thing,

Starting spamd: Cannot open auto_whitelist_path
/home/spamc/.spamassassin/auto-whitelist: Permission denied
