I'm using spamc/spamd on FreeBSD 4.3 and not having this problem.

Have you tried running spamd with the -D flag? It gives some debug info.
Does it help if you turn off the network tests? (run spamd with -L)
If you ktrace a "hung" spamc is it doing anything, or just stuck?
