The ATA level of the drive does not matter for SMART. The SMART Feature Set was introduced in ATA-3 (1997), the last enhancements were added in ATA-6 (2002). SMART is still part of ATA-8 and all modern ATA-8 drives support it. There was recently a smartctl output for a MK5065GSX on this list. This series is now in drive database. As far as I can see from the kernel messages in your last posts the drives are connected via a JMicron USB bridge. See http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/smartmontools/wiki/USB Please retry with '-d usbjmicron' option. > If this is truly the problem I need to ask if smartctl plans to support the > ATA-8 standards.
