I recently posted to this list concerning the inability of smartctl to detect
the Toshiba MK1665GSX hard drive. I believe I have found out the reason.
The Toshiba website states this drive supports the ATA-8 and SATA-2.6
standards. According to the smartctl man page, smartctl only supports up to
the ATA-7 command set.

If this is truly the problem I need to ask if smartctl plans to support the
ATA-8 standards. If you have plans on supporting ATA-8 do you have any idea
when this might occur?

The reason for this request is I have over 80 hard drives out in the field,
they are beginning to fail, and I have no way to test them.

Thanks,

Dave
