Dave,

It sounds like your dog has hemolytic anemia... his immune system is attacking his red blood cells. My 8 yr old Bichon Frise has had two bouts of this within the last year.... he needed transfusions both times. The first time they did not match his blood... he pulled through but it was very difficult and he became jaundiced from the transfusion. The second time they did match his blood and he pulled through much more quickly and did not become jaundiced. He did take prednisolone both times for a few months... in fact I am now keeping him on 5 mg. pred twice a week as a preventative (I hope). One vet I spoke with said he has had good results doing this. I also changed his diet to one free of all allergens, wheat, corn, peanuts... and also lowered his protein intake. He is doing well.... so much so you'd never know he was sick a day in his life. I still don't know what caused it.... I think it had something to do with eating raccoon poop but I'm not sure. I'm praying it does not come back. I give him CS in his water daily also but did not do this prior to his first episode. Good luck.... ----- Original Message ----- From: "ddarrin" <[email protected]>

Subject: CS>This man's best freind

I just got back from the Vet. They told me my dog's red blood count is so poor he should be comatose.( he nearly is)and they want to give him a blood transfusion, then fluid therapy with ringers lactate and prednisone for a number of months to the tune of $1,136.95 I love him very much but can't justify the expense on a $550.00 Pr. month income especially when they say that the likeliness
of his survival is in question.
Do dogs have blood typing like humans? The reason I asked is they had a dog there that they would use as a donor without any thought of blood type. I wonder if the reason they said he might not survive is due to the blood? He doesn't want to eat much so giving him anything to help him is difficult. I've been giving him a good deal of CS in his water for about four years. I asked them if this may have contributed to his condition and they said no. The prednisone was to stop his body from attacking itself. Wouldn't CMO do the job just as well?
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Dave
