It is silver!! I am continually amazed at the quality of education in this country! Has nobody ever been made aware of the Spanish conquest of Mexico and Peru? Of the coinage mints established in these countries and of the export of gold and silver coins and bullion bars to Spain in the 1700's? One of the earliest monetary exchange media in this country was the Spanish Real! Before the establishment of the United States and the US Mint! Because the value of the dollar size was so great for ordinary commerce, it was commonly chiseled into eight parts (does the expression "pieces of eight" ring a bell?) of 12 and one half cents each!! That is why the quarter coin is known colloquially as "two bits", even today! You can go on the web and buy Spanish gold and silver recovered from sunken galleons off our east coast today! They did not have access to Weather Service Bulletins and so got caught by frequent hurricanes!! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marshalee" <[email protected]>

:

So-called "Mexican silver" is not even
    silver at all.

*I did _not_ know that. That explains a couple of mysteries. Thanks for mentioning. MA*
