Jack, The silver in the filter appears to be an oxide, the result of drying, also a bit of the metal is present. There seems to be a lot about what's going on that isn't clearly understood, as is the case in ingesting CS. My understanding is that there are several theories about what goes on in the oliogodynamic action: 1. It takes 20 minutes of repeated contact for the harmful bacteria to die (some say 'become inactivated'). 2. The bacteria die 20 minutes after making contact. 3. Same as what's going on in #s 1. and 2., however the time period is 6 minutes.
I've had good luck with filters that allowed for only about 10 minutes contact time, bacteria withing the medium, but now I over-engineer. I design the filters to have a wall thickness such that the volume of the medium is equal to the volume of filtrate over a 20 minute period. The idea is that the bacteria will be D.O.A. in the lower container.
