I'd just like to put my tuppence worth in here. The fact that they want you
to give them your bank details at $10K makes me think that this is not a
PayPal thing but a regulatory thing. Whenever you withdraw $10K per year
(in one go or cumulative) the banks have to inform the Govt/IRS. This is
supposedly to try to counteract money laundering. I might be wrong, but it
might be worth considering, or asking PayPal WHY they want this information
once you hit $10K. Oh and by the way, the bank doesn't inform you when they
pass on your info to the IRS. That's the Patriot Act for you.

Hi Lou. Thanks for your post. I need to make a clarification here, though
-- I am not talking about a *notice from Paypal to update my account
information*. I, too, have received those scam emails, and I simply delete
them.

What I am talking about is a legitimate email from Paypal telling you that
you are approaching your ten thousand dollar spending limit. If you follow
up on this email by going to Paypal (never through a link, but by regular
internet access), you will see the same information on your Paypal account
page. And if you call Paypal by phone to inquire about this, they will tell
you that this is correct -- that you have to verify your identity (because
you have never come into their office and filled out an application form,
etc. -- why would I need to do that?)

My argument is that I've been doing business with Ebay and Paypal under the
same name, address and phone number, and the same credit card number, for
many years. If I wasn't who I say I am, wouldn't there have been a problem
by now?

My opinion -- they're asking for information that they're not entitled to,
and do not need to know. If you haven't encountered this problem yet, you
will when you reach their thresh-hold of ten thousand dollars.

I would like to give all a heads up. I too received a notice from PayPal to
update my account information. When I called PayPal they told me that no
such notice was ever sent by them. They informed me that any PayPal emails
to me email would start with 'Dear My Name". The email I received was "Dear
PayPal Customer".

Be aware anytime someone tries to extract personal info online. Asside from
the intro, the email look official as hell. Lou

I had no idea..........and no idea how close I am to the limit. Most places
I shop online take my credit card directly, so my transactions thru
paypal credit card processing are limited, and what few there are are mostly
ebay purchases. Ebay has been forcing people to use paypal by one means or
another for years.

Paypal has a policy where once you reach a ceiling of ten thousand dollars
having been spent through Paypal -- even though they are servicing your own
credit card -- they require you to *confirm* your identity by providing them
with your bank account numbers.
That's not happening! And I'm close to their arbitrary limit (having used
Paypal for years for Ebay and other online purchases) -- so I don't know how
I'm going to conduct business in the near future. Paypal has no business
asking for my banking information since they are not lending me money. They
are performing a for-fee service. So -- be careful out there.
