I respectfully question whether you are actually using DMSO if you are
not getting the garlic odor. That odor is from dimethylsulfide, a break
down product of DMSO in the body. DMSO is DimethylSulfoxide, it can only
break down to DMS, among other products. Some people do not experience
the taste or odor possibly due to their particular metabolism or detox
practices, such as using chlorophyll for example.

Some time ago, I bought a pint of DMSO and "purified" it by letting it
sit in the refrigerator so that the DMSO freezes, but the water with
the impurities in it remains liquid. Then I poured off the liquid
portion and what was left in the bottle was very pure DMSO. I also
tried to purify what was poured off the same way in a second bottle,
and succeeded to some extent, but the second batch still had some of
the smell. I went ahead and used that and could still smell/taste the
characteristic disgusting smell/taste but, when that was finished and
I went back to the first batch of pruified DMSO, I was very surprised
that I could detect almost none of the taste/smell upon using it. I
haven't used it orally though, and I don't swallow it.
People that need to use a lot of DMSO or take it orally should
definitely try this method, if only out of respect for other people.
I think that second batch could have been further purified by doing
the process again, and perhaps adding a couple of percent (by volume)
of distilled water and shaking before refreezing to dissolve out the
impurities.
It freezes in the refrigerator, not the freezer. You don't want to
get it cold enough to freeze the water. Also, it works better if
there is not too much water in the mix. I don't know if it would work
with 50% DMSO and 50% water, for instance.

Good question! I've been meaning to ask Marc about this and other
things that the stomach might alter or interfere with. DMSO and
MSM are similar in lots of ways, although DMSO is 'smellier' for a
lot of people. Actually, You can put DMSO just about anywhere and
it will go everywhere. I put it on my knee, topically and within
40 minutes I'm tasting it: that odd clam/garlic taste.
I also use Brook's mix: 75% CS, 15% Glycerine, 10%DMSO in glass
roll-ons I get from eBay.
