Funny you should say this, because here's something that happened in my first month at IITK and has stuck with me ever since: Our mess was arranged in two rows of tables with a reasonably broad space between them. However, it got crowded when the line of people waiting for food, the stream of people with full plates and mess staff carrying used plates and fresh food began to mill around during peak mess hours. So, it was obvious that sooner or later, someone would collide with someone else and food would hit the floor (as against what used to be food hitting the ceiling). This happened quite frequently, but on this one occasion, one of the dogs that inhabited our hostel yard happened to be in the vicinity. He comes trotting over to the pool of spilt food, sniffs at it, makes a little noise and trots away. Two more of his buddies follow him, because the mess staff hasn't gotten around to cleaning it up yet, and they do exactly the same thing. It was proof that we were being made to eat food that even dogs wouldn't touch of their own volition. Of itself, it's quite a silly story to tell, but young impressionable minds were scarred that night. But this was before I happened to sample the food at IITB, IITD, BITS Pilani and a few other places. I usually went back feeling thankful for the food we were fed in our mess. -- Sumant Srivathsan http://sumants.blogspot.com
