I think there are competing motives at play here. From recent interaction
with police officers at different levels I'm given to believe that the cops
are seriously cracking down on drugs of all sorts. Or at least will make an
appearance of the same. The core cause for this are the raves and the fact
that drugs are suddenly a lot more visible - in the media and in terms of
open use. The cops motive might well be to comply with this diktat, but the
issue can very easily be viewed from a culture-war perspective. I don't know
if the cops are worried about people doing weird drugs and having multiple
sexual partners in one night - they may well be. But I dont think that
derision will drive them to open such a pandora's box. So I'm not so sure
that this is a case of the cops opening up a culture war. Of course, it's
Karnataka and the BJP is in power, so I could be completely wrong. Or at
least appear to be completely wrong.
