That's probably because they're run in a much loosly co-ordinated
fashion than many other multi-brand manufacturers like GM, for
example.

Internationally though, Audi is to VW as Lexus is to Toyota or Acura is to Honda. Many Audi and VW cars share the same platform, but the Audi has a better trim and is generally a more luxurious car. Skoda, apparently, is on the other side of the VW-Audi scale as in Skoda < VW < Audi. Not sure where Seat figures. Lamborghini, though is a different class, isn't it?
