My favourite of this genre is the Algerian rai/punk rock artiste Rachid Taha. I became a fan after attending a small impromptu live performance in nairobi some years ago...He started with a prayer, and then all hell broke loose... hes got real presence and the music is a blend of traditional algerian folk with punk rock and elements of hip-hop....
