Knowledge flows through social connections: the theory that influenced me on this was at my time at PwC I implemented social media tools and my sponsor introduced me to this body of research about "informal networks" bypassing the traditional hierarchy of the firm.
My intention with this mailing list (which I started about a year later) was purely to support the growth of those informal networks. Sure, smart things get said here but as time passes, the only thing that persists is the reputation of people developed through this online interaction. Meaning, the things discussed here manifest into your personal brand. So I agree: stick with this national mailing list as segmenting it off becomes an opportunity cost for the entire community. But instead of a new list, commit to something more powerful: a weekly drinks with those in the space. As a case in point - Mick Liubinskas, Bart Jellema and myself all started with that knowing if we kept it up something impressive would emerge. And that's how Silicon Beach, startup camp, bootup camp, Growth town and a stack of relationships (including mine with Bart and Kim - who I didn't know before those first drinks and now regard them as close friends) came into being. So Canberra, where are your weekly drinks being held? :) Sent by my iPhone On Aug 15, 2010, at 9:19 PM, "Bart Jellema" <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi Keith, > > You might want to encourage people to join this group instead of a dedicated > Canberra group (or at least both).
