The usual locations for casual geek meetups and presentations in Melbourne are Horse Bazaar (Lt. Lonsdale St - http://horsebazaar.com.au/), and the Loop Bar (Meyer Place - http://www.looponline.com.au/).
Another is the Order of Melbourne, where the hive hold their meetups (most of the time) - Swanston St, http://www.theorder.com.au/ All are in the CBD, so really as central as you can get. I haven't been to any of them (I just see them in the meetup emails I get), so this isn't a recommendation; more of a pointer if you're completely lost. No idea about cost, or wifi, but wifi can be solved with a tethered laptop depending on the number of users (or mifi box if you have one).
