Did you do the following commands when you compiled?
make mrproper (this deletes current .config so you have to save it and cp
back as .config after the command is run)
make menuconfig/xconfig/oldconfig or whatever which way you did
make dep clean bzImage modules modules_install install
/sbin/lilo -v -v
Not sure which command or area of the compile causes it but it seems you
forgot to do something. Maybe didn't copy over system.map or bzImage file?
Maybe need to rerun /sbin/lilo again for new kernel to take affect?
