It is not listed in /usr/share/pci.ids or in xf86PciInfo, which is more
up-to-date video card wise, so it must be something pretty new and altogether
different.

You could try upgrading to XFree86 4.1.0, it seems to have much better ATI
support than 4.0.3, and use 'Driver "ati"' under Device in XF85Config-4.
Else, try SVGA server?
I think the installer uses a 16 color frame buffer.
