Do I need to request to be a translator for EACH project in Transifex
that I want to contribute to or is there some magic that the admins can
do?

You can also be added as a global translator.

Hi Daniel,
No you just need to present you a little, which language you had like
to contribute to, and give your username you used to register inside
Tx.
But that's already passé as I just added you to the translators group
which gives you privileges to upload and lock files :-)
