Well… does it have to be either/or, anyhow? Taking Apostolos’ last point, why
not have a switch?
It makes sense to allow for cross-platform compatibility, but there’s no reason
to think that *nobody* would appreciate an improved algorithm….

Of course. And while the harvest might be greater (not necessarily great as
such), the workers are few….

Dear TeX fans, 13/11/16
it is the first time I post anything on this list: I have used LaTeX for
lectures, slides, conference papers, etc. for many years, I have a complete
reference book, and always found answers in it or on the Web.
This time, I am quite stuck!
Howdy,
Sorry for the top post.
Have you installed MacTeX? It installs a full TeX Live distribution when
includes xe(la)tex.
Good Luck,

Let me add some remarks to Herb's comments.
The error message you reported mentions /opt/local/bin, etc. MacTeX doesn't
install TeX Live in /opt. Thus you are running into trouble because your
system is looking for TeX in the wrong place.
However, it is entirely possible that MacTeX did the co

Howdy,
I'd expect that you TeX Live distribution installed by MacTeX is perfectly
fine. I have no idea how you remove the one installed by MacPorts. Follow Dick
Koch's advice to check the MacTeX installed version. If that is ok following my
advice should fix things.

George White makes some very good points.
However, Christian Boitet's original message discussed TeXShop, and TeXShop
never consults the user's $PATH setting. It will be easier if Boitet gets
TeXShop working first, before dealing with the complexities
of shell startup scripts.

Howdy,
Who knows where you tried to install XeTeX.
What does
echo $PATH
return? Did you actually try running the commands supplied by Dick Koch.

Dear Joseph,
- \(pdf)uniformdeviate
- \(pdf)normaldeviate
- \(pdf)randomseed
- \(pdf)setrandomseed
(LuaTeX drops the 'pdf' part of the names.)
H. Kitagawa, the author of eptex, has added
\pdfuniformdeviate
\pdfnormaldeviate
\pdfrandomseed
\pdfsetrandomseed
in eptex and euptex (r42506 in TL).
