Let me make sure I got this straight, and to sum it up for anybody else who
may have something to contribute to this one. Computer 1 is a "server" per
se, in that it's connected to the Internet, waiting for a connection,
probably serving some other purpose. This computer is at a separate
locatio
do you have an internet ip? or does your router ip masquerade for
your office? if the latter there must be something like port mapping
on the router to allow you to connect to the work PC. Am I making
sense? Hope I do and it is helpful.

Hello! So, if you have the server running on A, and you
type "telnet 5900" from a command-line on
machine-B, what happens? You *should* see a response something
like "RFB 3.0"
This will help narrow down the LAN problems you're having.
Write back when you get it this far..
It would help a bit if you state what kind of computers you are dealing with:
Linux (which distro)
Solaris (which version)
Win95
Win98
WinME
WinNT4
W2000
etc
A lot to choose from.
