There is more than one clipboard in X.
CDE apps use "the other" clipboard.
In order to copy contents from one clipboard to the other you need to use
xcutsel.

Try setting and exporting your DISPLAY variable and then starting dtwm
(/usr/dt/bin/dtwm, I think).
